Preview of Points: As a result of my experience, I have concluded that the problem of date rape drugs could be easier prevented if people were aware of the drug and consequences it gives causing them to pay close attention and use common sense. Body I. Problem: In recent years a new kind of rape threat has reared it's ugly head at parties, on campuses and in nightclubs - so called "predator" or "date rape" drugs. Its new and its happening to people all over the world because its difficult to prevent. A. Date Rape is the most common form of rape (78%) with 1 in 4 girls expected to fall victim to rape or attempted rape before they reach 25, and 3 out of 5 rapes occurring before a woman reaches age 18. (Sources: Rape Statistics) B. Alcohol leads to date rape drugs 1. A research from Brown University states that 55% of female students and 75% of male students involved in acquaintance rape admit to having been drinking or using drugs when the incident occurred. 2. 90% of all campus rapes occur when alcohol has been used by either the assailant or the victim. II. Cause: The date rape drugs A. The three main types of date rape drugs 1. GHB (Gamma Hydroxybutyrate) 2. Rohypnol 3. Ketamine Hydrochloride. B. The drugs are virtually undetectable; they are tasteless, odorless and colorless. All traces of the drugs will leave the body within 72 hours of ingestion and are not found in any routine toxicology screen or blood test - doctors and police have to be looking specifically for them and they have to look quickly! C. Date rape drugs are easily slipped into drinks and food and are very fast acting. They render the victim unconscious but responsive with little or no memory of what happens while the drug is active in their system. D. The drugs also make the victim act without inhibition, often in a sexual or physically affectionate way. Like most drugs, date rape drugs render a person incapable of thinking clearly or of making appropriate decision. This makes for a very passive victim, one who is still able to play a role in what is happening but who will have no clear memory of what happened after-the-fact. E. Without any memory of events the victim is often unaware that they have even been raped, and if they are aware or have suspicions they make very poor witnesses. III. Solution: Most of the ways to prevent getting poisoned by date rape drugs are common sense. A. Don't accept open drinks (alcoholic or non-alcoholic) from others who you do not know or do not trust; this includes drinks that come in a glass. B. When in bars or clubs always get your drink directly from the bartender and do not take your eyes off the bartender or your order; don't use the waitress or let somebody go to the bar for you. C. At parties, only accept drinks in close containers: bottles, cans or tetra packs. D. Never leave your drink unattended or turn your back on your table. E. Do not drink from open beverage sources like punch bowls, pitchers or tubs. F. Keep your eyes and ears open; if there is talk of date rape drugs or if friends seem "too intoxicated" for what they have taken, leave the party or club immediately and don't go back! G. If these behavior modifications don't feel like enough protection, or if you don't think you can follow these rules on a given night, you do have another option.
