Chuck carves images of people into rock faces. He holds Kelly’s locket-pocket watch for inspiration and hope. He creates a surrogate companion by dabbing a bloody face on a “Wilson” volleyball. He names his new friend, Wilson. Throughout the story, I noticed Wilson began to look similar to Chuck. Chuck grew long hair and his skin was darkened by the constant sun. Similarly, Wilson became more saggy and deflated with a handful of straw springing from his forehead. Chuck used Wilson as his confident and friend. He often had arguments with him and mourned his death when losing him to the ocean. Chuck’s next need was self-esteem. Marlow describes this need as liking and respecting oneself or self-esteem. In the beginning he doesn’t like himself very much and has no faith in his abilities to survive alone so he tries to commit suicide.
