An Unforgetable Experience
...ace down with her knees bent at a ninety degree angle. Her back sloped unto her chest, her butt in the air and her face buried in the pillow. She was crying uncontrollable. “Oh God no, noo, nu, no not now,” I said to myself. Fearful for what Mother Nature had in mind. “What’s the matter Ash? why are you crying and lying down like that?” I asked. “I think the baby is coming, I think I’m in labor sis,” she replied in a painful voice. “Don’t be silly, you can’t be in labor you’re not due until the next six to eight weeks, maybe the baby is just kicking again,” I said hopefully as I tried to get her to sit up. About ten minutes later she felt the pain again, this time she gave out a more painful scream. Her water broke and the rug next to the bed was soaked. “O.K. sis don’t worry just relax and breathe, I did this before not practically but I watched it on TLC.” I said humorously as I tried to get her to relax. As terrified and frightened as I was, I had to remained calm. I hurried to the living room and called a cab. As I was dialing the number, my hands and knees were shaking. Although I had the correct number for the cab, I must have dialed over a million different numbers before I got it right. “Fast and reliable taxi service, how can I help you,” a female voice on the other line answered. “This is an emergency, I need a cab at 177 Edward Avenue, my sister is having a baby and I need to get her to the hospital now,” I shriek unintentionally. “Sorry Mam, but the cab won’t be there until the next twenty-five to thirty minutes,” the voice replied. “Fast and reliable my ass,” I replied angrily and slammed the receiver down. By this time Ashley’s screaming and moaning became more consistent. “Oh sis, sis where are you? What’s taking so long?” she wailed from within the room. Then I picked back up the receiver and dialed 911. “Why didn’t I think of this before,” I thought to myself. “911, what’s the emergency?” A male operator asked. “I, we, my sister, she is in labor and I need an ambulance,” I answered confusingly. “What’s your name?” he asked “Kadian, Kaidan Smith,” I replied. “O.K. Kadian, I need you relax and calm down, I need some information, so I’m going to ask you a couple of questions,” he commanded nicely. Then he began. He asked for my address, did her water break, where my sister was at the time, was there any sign of blood, if I knew how for apart her contractions were. After I had finished answering his questions, he responded. “Kadian I need you to listen to me and listen to me carefully, your sister is about to give birth anytime soon whether we are ready or not, and the ambulance won’t be there until the next thirty minutes. So you are going to have to help her deliver the baby.” “Deliver the baby, me deliver baby, I can’t deliver no baby,” I responded back with a tearfully, trembling and terrified voice. “Kadian don’t freak out on me now, just stay calm. Your sister and the baby are going to need you. I know you are scared, don’t worry I am going to talk you through this, but you have to do precisely what I say,” he said convincingly. With the phone now on speaker phone, I did what he said. I check on my sister who by this time was on the floor curled up and crying. I told her what was happening and helped her to the living room on the couch next to the night stand where the phone was placed. I hurried to the closet in my room, grabbed some clean towels, blankets, sheets and a pillow from off the bed as instructed. I even grabbed my purple cotton Martha Stewart sheet unintentionally, and hurried back to the phone. “Hello! I got the sheets and blankets, what's next,” I asked as I tried to listen to his instruction through Ashley's screams. He told me to undress her from the waist down. Spread the sheet out on the floor. Gentle lay her down on the sheet. Place the pillow behind her head. Bend her knees and spread her legs apart. Make sure she keeps breathing. Inhale through her nose and exhale out her mouth. Check if you can see the baby's head crowning,” he ordered. “Oh my God, oh my god, I see it, I see the head,” I yelled excitingly to the voice on the speaker phone, while still in the state of shock. "Now what should I do?" “What's your sister name?” he question. “Ashley,” I responded “Can she hear me?” “Yes, you are on a speaker phone,” I reminded him, as my sister squeezed the life out of my hands. “Ashley,” he co...
