By the end of the war, Japanese soldiers had killed ten of thousands allied prisoners of war. Civilians were placed in front of Japanese lines to detonate mines and to draw American fire. Japan was clearly in violation of the Geneva conventions. The Japanese military leaders were not willing to surrender, they decided to honor the military code of bushido and fight to the death. The invasions of Japan would take the lives of over 45 thousand soldiers. America had lost close to 20 thousand troops invading Iwo Jima and Okinawa.
