The U.S. military made many grave mistakes before the attack on Pearl Harbor. Thinking that the Japanese would not attack at Pearl Harbor they moved from San Diego, Ca to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The harbor is shaped like a bottleneck therefore if they were to be attacked and a large enough ship sank at the entrance of the bay, all the battle ships and such could be trapped in the harbor because of the shallowness of the water which was approximately 40 feet deep. It was enough to keep them trapped for months as one Japanese airman stated. A mistake that they made that kept them from being able to do any air combat during the time of the attack was putting the airplanes nose to nose instead of spread out. Putting the planes nose to nose made it easier for the Japanese airbombers to drop less bombs and still be able to attack multiple planes at once with a sort of domino effect; this way the Americans stayed grounded. When the American military got radar it had to be placed at the highest point possible that way they could get the best read. The highest point was in a national park in which they would not allow them to put the radar on. The military did not take any further action and placed it lower than recommended.
