The fact that divorce has become so prevalent in American culture has been attributed to many things. Over the years, laws have greatly changed and the ability to get divorces has become much easier. Some people believe it is the ability to get divorces so much easier than in the past that has had significant effects on the acceptance of divorce. Whatever the reasons are the effects of divorce on families and society can be very disruptive. There are many reasons why the United States should pass this bill. One of those reasons being the cost of divorce. One researcher determined that, “a single divorce costs state and federal governments about $30,000, based on such things as the higher use of food stamps and public housing as well as increased bankruptcies and juvenile delinquency.” Also, families with children that were not poor before the divorce see their income drop as much as 50 percent. Almost 50 percent of the parents with children that are going through a divorce move into poverty after the divorce.
