WHY I LIKE CALIFORNIA The sun rises over a stand of Redwood trees over 300 feet tall. The surf pounds against a scalloped shoreline falling precipitously into a raging ocean. The faces of a thousand Chinese crowded on Grant Street in San Francisco make me wonder about different cultures. And the mellow aroma of the Valley of the Moon near Glen Ellen winery delights my sense. And it's January. Friends of mine tease me constantly about how often I recall my three-week winter trip to the Golden State, asking why I simply don't go to school out there. What they don't understand is that all I want from California is retreat, a place to see and do things I cannot do in my hometown. Those who are truly interested tend to ask what in particular it is about California that I love, and usually I tell them "the open, tolerant world view," something difficult to understand if one has never been west of Ohio. While the openness and variety of California is one of the first differences I feel when I visit the state, I spent most of my time travelling from desert to mountains to shoreline, tasting exotic new foods, taking colorful pictures and meeting many different kinds of people.
