Abigail, noticing the immediate response she is given, cries out suddenly “I want the light of God; I want the sweet love of Jesus… I saw Goody Osborn with the devil! I saw Bridget Bishop with the Devil.” (Miller 48) in order to save herself and take control of the situation. Abigail further uses the Rhetoric of consensus in naming names that she saw with the devil. This is a key fact because it helps to fuel the fire that creates such hysteria in the town. Abigail further uses her placement in the consensus and the rhetoric of consensus to gain more power and control people in the society. When Elizabeth proctor, John proctors wife is accused of being a witch and john proctor tries to defend her it is evident that the people of Salem are now being controlled by Abigail. When Cheever comes to retrieve Elizabeth, he is scared and justifies all of his actions by saying that the court made him do it, and that he dare not go away from the court. This instance shows the fear that people had of the court and therefore of Abigail. By showing her loyalty to the court Abigail gains control of Danforth and so gains control over the fate of the people in the hearings. This is evident when Abigail reprimands Danforth for even considering the idea of her lying. “Let you beware, Mr. Danforth Think you to be so mighty that the power of Hell may not turn your wits? Beware of it!” (108) Abigail furthers her scene in pretending to see a bird in the air as if Mary Warren is attacking her. This further shows her manipulation of the courts and her talking the rhetoric of consensus. By using the idea of witchcraft in the court and completely changing the focus on her threatening Danforth she can get away with both ruining Mary Warren and solidifying her control over the court. By using the rhetoric of Consensus and controlling the people of her society, Abigail stays a step ahead of the game and is successful in manipulating the system.
