A Woman Rights

...ied that human life began at conception. In recent years, there were laws set out for the under aged women who receives abortions in the case of Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Pennsylvania vs. Casey. The ruling was that there must be a twenty-four hour waiting period before the abortion process is performed. Now the young woman must give her informed consent to go through with the abortion. Most importantly a parent or guardian must be notified before and abortion is performed on a minor. There were many other court cases that were pertaining abortion, such as the case of Thornburg vs. American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologist. In this case, it ruled that the woman must received alternative information before the abortion is performed. Also, detailed statistics of all abortion must be recorded. It was also ordered that the post-viaibly abortions are to be performed in a way that the child would have a chance to survive. Raising a child isn’t easy at all. Every woman’s situation is different. Some women’s lifestyles are suited to not have children. Sometimes abortions are in the best. In Newsweek, Jan. 26, 1998: “Diana,” a 19-year –old student at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, learned she was pregnant. She was scared to tell her parents, who are Jehovah’s Witnesses and don’t believe in premarital sex, let alone abortion. After agonizing for a week she concluded she couldn’t afford to interrupt her education. (Reibstein 66) As a friend accompanied Diana to the Planned Parenthood/ Preterm clinic, in Boston, protesters were in front of the facility shouting, “Change your mind. You can’t kill a baby” (66). Diana responded, “Are you going to take care of my baby?”(66). Despite the protesters attempt to change her mind Diana, decided to have the abortion anyway. Even though Diana feels sad at times, especially when she spend time with nephew. Having a child requires an awful lot of responsibilities. It is possible that the monetary sources aren’t available for potential mothers. Also, there are some women who pregnant and is not associate anymore with the paternal side of the fetus. This can make the road a little harder. Even though abortion is legal to a certain extent, Pro Choicer has brought up the issue that ninety percent of all abortions take place at twelve weeks or earlier. But Cynthia Gorney author of “Articles of Faith” stated, “with partial-birth”, a procedure that is preformed in late pregnancies, “the right-to-life movement succeeded for the first time in forcing the country to really look at one awful abortion procedure” (66-3). Despite what any anti-abortionist felt, former President Clinton stood along side feminist groups by twice vetoing legislation to prohibit “partial-birth” abortions. President Bush stated “if that was him he would have never sign such a bill” (Silva 2). Even though abortions are one hundred percent safe, technology has come far. As a matter of fact, besides the traditional procedure isn’t the only legal way anymore. There is a drug that has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Sept. 28,2000 called Mifepristone. Mifepristone is considered anti-progesterone drug that blocks receptors of progesterone. The drug induces abortion when given in early pregnancies. More than 600,000 women in Europe used mifepristone and were successful with their abortions. In the United States, more than 2,000 women participated in the clinical trials of the drug between 1994 and 1995. Ninety- six percent of the women reported that they would recommend the mifepristone to others. This drug is also free from the uterine perforation. Also, anesthetics are not necessary when using mifepristone. When being involved in any act such as having surgery or taking medication, there are always side effects. Abortions are no different. Having an abortion gives you the risk of developing uterine perforation. Also being put to sleep one risk the chance of never waking up. The woman may never be able to have children if the procedure goes wrong. Even the drug mifepristone has side effects such as abdominal pain, bleeding, and gastrointestinal distress. On the positive side, there has been no death report for using mifepristone. Since abortions are difficult times in a woman’s life, the ruling in the case of Roe vs. Wade, women are required to have counseling and /or a cooling of period before an abortion is performed. However, women in poverty will no longer receive any financial support. For an under aged women, it was ruled that a 24 hour waiting period before an abortion is performed. A therapeutic abortion is a “termination of a pregnancy via the intervention of a physician through surgery or the use of RU-486 or some other medication” (Religious Tolerance.org 2). Those that are pro-life in terms of the battle of abortions be...
