Issues and Discussion Though set in a Jewish community, the story present the following issues which we can relate to: -- first experience of death -- the problems of the elderly between in-laws. 1 1.there are many conflicts among three generations and the middle has the heaviest burden to take care of both the old and the children. But sometimes it is hard to make a balance .while they devote themselves to bringing up the next generation selflessly, they face the responsibility and morality to take care the old generation. they may sometimes consider it as a extra burden. (My grandmother had six children and seven stepchildren) Bifurcation may appear between wife and husband. and when dealing with the old ,the idea of sharing the burden with other family members can also cause problems and conflicts. 4 This film is great for introducing the Jewish community in Montreal in between the wars and Jewish writer (Mordecai Richler) To different degrees, the women are all victims of social pressures and conventions, which force these women into lives of domestic suffering and overwork 3In the room and on the balcony, the adults cry or talk about the death.
