This was a tradition in many towns in that area that had been around since before anyone could remember. The people of the town continued to follow the tradition of doing the lottery every year because it was what was expected. The lottery was a pointless tradition that created a corrupt society. The lottery was done in many towns and had been since before anyone could remember. The people had done it so many times that they only half listened to the directions. The social significance in this story is very simple to understand. "The Lottery" is very symbolic to the way of life that we see everyday. Mrs. Adams states, " Some places already quit the lottery"(Jackson 87). The begging of change has already occured somewhere else but still significant. It first begins through the black box all the pieces of paper were dropped into. The black box is the central theme or idea in the story. It symbolizes some type of mystery, until we read the ending and we realize that it is similar to doom. Someone's fate lies in an inanimate object, the black box.
