Gay Marriages
...ey should be allowed to express how they feel for each other through marriage. But what is still wrong with same-sex marriages? The main purpose of marriage is procreation. Same-sex marriage spouses cannot bring children into the world by themselves. Having children ensures that the family will continue on for future generations. Hon. Marisa Ferretti Barth argues: Unfortunately, society has a tendency today to forget the importance of marriage. It is more than the simple union between two people. Marriage is the public joining together of a man and a woman who want to found a family, to have children… Many still argues that homosexual couples should still be married, for there are heterosexual couples who are infertile. If that is the case, they too, should not be able to marry each other, simply because they cannot procreate. So, what’s still stopping them to be able to marry each other? Not only same-sex spouses cannot procreate, many believe that they make inferior parents, because one child will be unrelated to the child. Given that both parents are male and have a child who is a girl, during puberty neither parents will be able to relate to the child. They will have a hard time explaining the changes that can occur while she’s undergoing this stage of adulthood. Groups which support same-sex marriage argue that homosexual couples are as loving and are equal or superior to heterosexual couples (Durgin-Clinchard). They are no different than heterosexual parents. When it comes to raising children, those who are raised with same-sex parents are subjected to hate. They will be ridiculed by their fellow students, which can have a negative affect in the child’s development-both mentally and physically. It is also believed that children raised in families headed by gay or lesbian parents will be immersed in the gay lifestyle and be more likely to choose to become homosexuals themselves when they grow up. But they again, those who support same-sex marriage say that it is without accuracy that this could be true. Some children who are raised by homosexual parents tend to do well, regardless if their homosexual parents raised them. As a matter of fact, children raised by homosexual couples tend to: Discriminate less on matters of race, gender or sexual orientation Be more sexually experimental before marriage Be of the same percentage as in the general population Another concern is that children will be exposed to homophobia by the public. The hatred which is directed to the parents will spread to the child. This can greatly affect the child and may refuse to leave the house and will feel embarrassed if seen with his or her homosexual parents. Given that, many argue that the same thing be said with inter-racial marriages, for their children will be of mixed racial ancestry and may experience racism from racial extremists? Moreover, allowing homosexual couples to marry each other will bring a radical change to society. Allowing them to marry will drastically redefined the fundamental structure of our society and our long-recognized cultural values. Andrew Sullivan argues, The introduction of gay marriage would not be some sort of leap in the dark, a massive societal risk. Homosexual marriages have always existed, in a variety of forms; they have just been euphemized. Increasingly they exist in every sense but the legal one. As it has become more acceptable for homosexuals to acknowledge their loves and commitments publicly, more and more have committed themselves to one another for life in full view of their families and friends. A law institutionalizing gay marriage would merely reinforce a healthy trend. Hence, there is no radical change that will occur once same-sex marriage is legalize. More people and the society will be more accepting of same-sex marriage once it is legalize, for they will become more acquainted with these couples. No matter how much same-sex couples are acknowledge in the society, many will still believe it to be morally wrong. For many, allowing same-sex marriage is just plain disgusting. Just seeing them holding hands and kissing in public can make someone’s stomach twirl. Just imagine two men or women engaging in sex will make a person’s stomach heave. What if one day you are out with your child and he/she spots two men or two women hugging and kissing each other, how would you describe this situation to them? Would you say it is a natural thing to do, hence, your child will imitate what he/she has seen? No matter how you put it, same-sex marriages are wrong. Not only are they wrong, same-sex marriage will simply cost too much. When people marry, they are automatically given 500 benefits from the state and 1,000 more from the federal government. Among with these benefits are as follows: File joint tax returns Obtain join insurance policies for home, auto and health Inherit automatically in the absence of a will Secure work place Social Security Medicare Having them marry, will drain our economy. This is something that we cannot afford. And such benefits merely make homosexual lifestyle more attractive and thus will encourage more youths and young adults to chose a homosexual lifestyle. Another major concern that many holds is the “slippery slope” concern. Many believe that if same sex marriages are legalized, then decriminalization of prostitution, polygyny, polyandry, and incest will necessarily follow (Robinson). Once you allow same-sex marriage, others will necessarily follow. Men will want to marry two or more women; women will marry multiple men; multiple men and multiple women will from group marriages. And worst case scenario, men will want to marry their dogs, whom they dearly love. There is no stopping the changes once one thing is allowed, in this case same-sex marriages. These are the many reasons why same-sex marriages should not be allowed. But, here are some of the supporters arguments to why same-sex marriages should be allowed. Many supporters believe that same-sex marriages will not affect opposite-sex marriages. Heterosexual couples will still be able to marry each other and will still be able to receive the many benefits that comes along with marriage. Same-sex marriage are only but an “add on.” Having a homosexual couple living down your street will not at all affect your own marriage. But allowing them to be married, like explained before, will cheapens marriage. As Dr. James C. Dobson, of Focus on the Family said: "If marriage means everything, it means absolutely nothing" (Robinson). If it means nothing to same-sex couples, then it absolutely means nothing to opposite-sex couples. Supporters also argue that marriage is a fundamental hu...
