Chronicles of Narnia

...and locked it so the kids and Aunt Letty wouldn’t be able to walk in or out. Polly and Digory slowly started backing up when Mr. Ketterley said, “Not just yet. This is too good an opportunity to miss. I wanted two children. You see, I’m in the middle of a great experiment.” Digory hastily tried to convince Mr. Ketterley that they mustn’t stay that they both had dinner to attend. Finally he gave in and told the children they may go just as long as they returned afterwards. He then told Polly that before she left he must give her a nice present. He told her that she could a have a pretty yellow ring. Polly then started thinking that maybe he wasn’t crazy after all and started walking to get the ring. Digory on the other hand could see right through Mr. Ketterley. “Polly! Don’t be a fool!” Digory shouted. “Don’t touch them.” But just as he said that, Polly was gone. It was too late; she just vanished as if she wasn’t ever really there. Digory was furious and demanded to know where Polly had gone. Finally Mr. Ketterley told Digory the story about how he came upon magic and had been trying to find out what happens when you touch the yellow rings. Mr. Ketterley then tricked Digory into touching another yellow ring to go save Polly. Digory did so after quite a few minutes and then just as Polly had done, Digory vanished. All of a sudden Digory felt as if he was in water. A light seemed to come down on him from above, as dark light was below him. Then before he knew it, he was standing on the ground. He wasn’t soaking wet or panting for breath as he thought he would have been. The only things he could see were grass, trees, and millions of small pools. It was the quietest and most peaceful place ever. When he tried to describe it the only thing he could think of was, “It was a rich place: as rich as plum cake.” Digory couldn’t remember how he had gotten there, and felt like he was always there. But after a long look at the woods around him he noticed that there was a girl lying on the grass right under a tree. Both Digory and Polly forgot everything of their past and for a few minutes didn’t even know that they had known each other. Once they realized it they were both curious and scared of what to do. Digory then remembered that Uncle Andrew – Mr. Ketterley -- had given him a green ring that was supposed to bring him right back, from wherever he was, as soon as they touched it. Right as they were about to go back to their world, Digory talked Polly into going into a different pool to see if it took them into another world. Soon enough they found themselves jumping into another pool and feeling that strange sensation of being under water. When they finally were back on there feet they noticed that this world was completely different from the last. The light was a dull, red light, not of that from a sun. The sky was extremely dark, and looked as if a massive storm was about to hit. Everything around them was ruined, like there had been a war there many years before. It was quiet and rather cold. They immediately started looking around and came to a building that wasn't all to ruins. Inside the building they came upon a room that looked as if it was full of people having some sort of meeting. But they soon realized that these people weren’t alive. They looked as if they were frozen in time by some kind of magic. In front of all the people was one bell. There beside it was a pillar that was inscribed with this intriguing poem: “Make your choice, adventurous Stranger; Strike the bell and bide the danger, Or wonder, till it drives you mad, What would have followed if you had.” Digory then stroked the bell, and out came a sweet note. The sweet note didn’t stop, but instead it grew louder and louder. Then an earthquake came and everything started falling. But then all at once it all stopped. The music, the earthquake, just everything acted as if it never started. But then came forward from the people a very tall woman. She was the queen of all the people and had been put under a spell. This was a terrible woman – a witch. She told them how she ruined the country. And they told her how they happened to come into this world. She then demanded them to take her to their world. They refused and called her names, which only made her more mad. When they tried to escape that world by putting on their yellow rings she caught hold of Polly’s hair and vanished with them back into Uncle Andrews’s attic. There she planned to rule the world. She made Uncle Andrew a slave. And went out and stole a bunch of clothes and jewelry. When Digory and Polly were trying to catch the witch and bring her back to her world they accidentally brought more then they expected. Not only had they brought the witch to the World of the ...
