WAter Crisis

... according to Alex Kirby of BBC. Water born diseases is the leading cause of death for the developing world. One person dies every eight seconds from water borne diseases. Conferring from the Third World Traveler and the United Nations environment program, 2/3 of the world will be living in conditions of serious water shortage and remaining 1/3 will live in conditions of absolute water scarcity. Also considering that we use about 70% of our water in agriculture, we would have to use 17% more water that is available in the planet in order to feed the world in the year 2020. This is according to BBC News of UK. According to the United Nations environment program, 50+ countries have identified the water crises as the most worried crises they are facing, even more worried then global warming. The United Nations Environment program says “The world's thirst for water is likely to become one of the most pressing resource issues of the 21st century.” There are many reasons why the water crises is so deadly. One major thing is the lack of respect to the almighty powerful water. An example of this would be pollution. Pollution is depleting our finite source of fresh water at an incredibly fast rate. Pollution is a major cause for making freshwater undrinkable. Pollution makes freshwater very difficult to renew thus making it unusable. A major source of this pollution is the global expansion in mining and manufacturing and even agriculture according to the Third World traveler. Mining definitely increases the threat of pollution to underground water sources. Heavy metals, acids, and persistent organic pollutants are constantly contamination the aquifers. A example of what pollution can do to water is the Aral sea which is between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. The Aral sea is so polluted that it isn’t good for anything. What a waste of good water!! Another thing that is contributing to the water crises is ground-water over pumping. Ground water is a major source for the world’s remaining fresh water. The rate we are pumping it is leading to aquifer depletion. According to the United States Environment Protection program, the high planes aquifer in the U.S is being depleted eight times faster then nature can replenish itself. In Saudi Arabia ground water pumping is leading to a total complete depletion for all of Saudi Arabia which should happen in year 2050 according to the Third World Travelor. According to Michal Kraveik and his team of scientists at the Slovakia non-governmental organization (NGO) ; deforestation, dam construction and infrastructure greatly diminishes the amount of freshwater on the planet. Michal Kraveik explains that "Right of domicile of a drop is one of the basic rights, a more serious right than human rights.” Another reason for the water crises is the growing population. That has a lot to do with the water crisis since the population is growing at such a fast rate, humans are unable to adapt to the increasing constant demands for freshwater. Freshwater is being depleted because of inability for humans to ...
