...n’t want marijuana to be legalized. Marijuana is known as the gateway drug. People usually see as a less harmful drug. More experimenting goes on with marijuana then any other drug. People will experiment with marijuana. The feeling of one drug brings them to the sea of different drugs. They turn themselves into a drug addict with the experimenting of one drug. The THC inside the drug can make people act irrational. They would do stupid things. They will disrupt the community and the public. With this they are putting others at risk. By them smoking, they are a hazard to themselves and to others. Marijuana would help this country more then hurt. Marijuana is a drug, and like most drug, it doesn’t come cheap. With the legalization of marijuana, the number of buyers would increase. With the increasing of buyers, there would be inflation. This inflation would help our economy. Marijuana was said to have been very harmful and hurt us. Marijuana is harmful. It can cause lung cancer as the inhalation of any smoke can, but it is safer then cigarettes. It would take a longer time to get lung cancer from marijuana then cigarettes. Marijuana is smoked less. So gaining lung cancer is more rare in marijuana then cigarettes. Cigarettes also have tar in them. Tar will destroy your lungs faster. Marijuana was said to kill brain cells, but that is false. Recent studies show that monkeys, who were force to inhale the equivalent of four to five marijuana cigarette smoke every day for one year. They had no traces of brain abnormalities. Our jails are filled with men and women who possessed marijuana. In 2001 statistics, 24,299 drug offenders were sentenced in court. Out of that, 7,991were marijuana offenders so rounding that, that would be 32.8% of the drug offenders who were caught for marijuana. 97.7% were sentenced for trafficking. That left 2.3% people who got sentence for simple possession. That would be 186 people. Out of that, 63 of them went to jail, but that out of the 174 whose cases that are known. Therefore, percentage shows about 67 out of 184 people go to jail for possession only. Also, depending on the amount of marijuana you possess, you will go to jail from 0 – 20 years. One way people might see this is 67 isn’t a big number and 0 years isn’t long, but no matter how long or how short you have in jail, its still a frightening place. ‘"Some people are lucky and just get a slap on the wrist," said Bruce Mirken, MPP director of communications.
