The most intriguing aspect I noticed about the culture that Welch was engineering was how he stayed faithful to one guiding principle throughout the 20 years of history depicted in the video. In 1981, he stated that GE must “strive to be better than the best.” He never became complacent or stagnant with his success. In 1999, he reinforced this rule of never settling and motivated his people by reminding them to “wake up everyday knowing that someone is doing what you do better than you.” Welch stressed the principles of never settling and created a company of limitless vision with no boundaries. In creating this culture, everyone was given a chance to grow in the company. Productivity was not limited to a certain percentage increase each year. Quite the opposite, Welch said that productivity “is as big as your dreams are.” Having people on board who live by these principles is the recipe for an outstanding company.
