In the absence of such a repression, a general disregard for the criminal law would develop and citizens would live in constant fear. The due process model embodies traditional politically liberal values. In this model, the principal goal of criminal justice is at least as much to protect the innocent as it is to convict the guilty. The due process model is based on the doctrine of legal guilt and the presumption of innocence. It provides protection against illegitimate conviction through procedural safeguards. If constitutional safeguards are breached, the conviction should be reversed through post-conviction appeal. Accordingly, the correctness of the decision is not the sole concern, and the method of conviction and trial process is important.
