Imperialism in Heart of Darkness
... the uttermost ends of the earth”(Conrad.) Conrad conveys his point of view through his usage of literary techniques, especially his usage of language. Conrad also shows that the darkness in his novel comes from two distinct forces, one the “darkness within the man himself” and two the “ignorance and illusions”(Sarvan) presented to the man. The fist views that Conrad had on imperialism were seen in his views on the differences in the cultures of the Europeans and the Africans. The specific words that he used to describe them, clearly present his views on imperialism in that time period. Conrad describes the Europeans to a higher degree of standard than the Africans. “They often felt they had achieved a much higher civilization than the people they were confronting and conquering” (Sarvan.) That is to say that the Europeans thought that they were much higher class and more sophisticated at that time.
