She speaks of how the baby has changed and was startled to see him after four weeks. Armand is the next person to notice the difference. The fact that the baby is different, changes the way he feels about both Desiree and the child. He seems to be disgusted with the fact that the baby is not white. He therefore assumes that because the baby is bi-racial, that Desiree is therefore not white. After Desiree notices the baby’s color, she too seems to be taken back. She cannot understand how this has come about. She instantly knows that this is the cause for the change in Armand’s actions and manner.
