The southern states did not want to abolish slavery; their economies relied on slave labor to produce staple crops . If slavery was abolished, the economies of many southern states would certainly plummet . This idea is what led southern states to not want the abolition of slavery . Furthermore, although technically “free”, the laws in many states discriminated against free blacks, barring them from purchasing property, certain jobs, and educating their children . Although the path toward freedom was becoming closer, America still had years before African Americans were totally liberated . Both women and African Americans were greatly affected by the ideas of the American Revolution . Women were less discriminated against, as were the African Americans, some of whom the masters even freed . The fight for equality was not finished yet, though, and both women and African Americans had a long way to go before they were considered equal to white men .
