When John Steinbeck was growing up, his father served as the Country Treasurer, while his mother worked as a former high school teacher, she nurtured him and introduced him to the world of literature. From that point on he developed interest in reading and writing. During the summer time, John Steinbeck worked on the nearby ranches, living and enjoying the countryside and its people. He notice lots of migrate workers while working there and got to see the difficulty life of a migrate worker. After graduating from Salinas High School, Steinbeck had an English major and attended Stanford University and pursued an independent study program. But he barely manages to attend because he had various jobs. In 1925 he left Stanford, to pursue his career in New York. He worked as journalist, unfortunaly he was unsussful in getting himself notice and publishing any of his work. So He returned to California to become a novel-writer after he had worked as a reporter. He continued in writing until 1929 he published his first novel Cup of Gold but attracted little attention.
