New Year's Day in Japan and the U.S.
. The Japanese gives out otoshidamas for children . These are decorated envelopes with money in them and usually have the same amount for the children of the same household . Then the Japanese also makes mochi or rice cakes to celebrate New Year’s . Japanese are also known to write their famous structure of poetry: haikus . Along with these, fireworks are set and games are played to make the day very enjoyable . But most importantly, postcards or nengajo, are given to relatives and friends . These cards are usually sent before New Year’s and the post offices hire part-time students to help with the delivery . But on occasion, the postcards will not be sent to families who have recently had a deceased . These enjoyments of the New Year’s are similar in Japan and the United States, yet there can be differences .
