How significant is setting In Lawrence's writing, comparing Lawrence's travel writing, 'Mornings in Mexico', and the short stories, 'The white stocking' 'oder of Chrysanthemums' and 'The prussian officer'
DH Lawrence's depiction of the setting in the white stocking reveals a rather empty lonely setting, yet consisting of guilty, thrilling emotions set for the reader, quoting, “became aware of the raw, morning cold” this sets a hollow, empty mood and consisting of a lonely mood for the reader with no warmth at all. It might relate to Lawrence as a person because he secluded himself for a while to further his passion for writing, he did not have the publics support for his writing and therefore was a lonely man, It connects the story and Lawrence life together. Lawrence continues to write with this atmosphere and mood for the rest of the story for the reader but the atmosphere changes when he writes, “pearls may be fair, but thou at fairer. .. .grimace and grin”this clearly changes the readers mood and imagination, changing the cold, hollow atmosphere to a romantic, blooming affair possibly a guilty pleasure . On the other hand, in contrast to his travel writing, 'Mornings in Mexico-Corasmin and the parrots', Lawrence is describing himself and other writers who might go abroad for inspiration, as he is sat it Mexico, writing, "We talk so grandly, in capital letters, about Morning in Mexico, it sets a different mood clearly by the title itself, he seems to have thought of Mexico as a paradise, an oasis of some sort, where he seems to taste freedom for a writer and sets the mood for the reader as well, “bits of sky” this image has an open, clear mood for the reader, a fresh one perhaps . Lawrence might have been relating it to freedom, because in his personal life, his writing wasn't supported by a lot of people and publishers did not want to publish his work, therefore suggesting that he does not have complete freedom as a writer to publish his works, but just enough freedom to continue writing . He also uses 'mornings' a lot, sort of sets an image of clear, blue skies, fresh day, a new beginning in the readers mind, a new beginning as a writer perhaps . On the other hand, Lawrence draws a plain scene, but yet describes it powerfully enough to start a dramatic effect no the readers imagination in the “the odor of chrysanthemums” quoting a phrase, “insignificantly trapped” its a foresight perhaps of her situation of her life and her relationship, it creates a trapped mood for the reader . Lawrence uses words such as “stagnant light” it creates an imagination, a visual sense, yet described in a sense of smell, creates the image of a grim, cold, occupied by lower classes
