Incentives and Rewards - Pay for Performance
. Using student evaluations as a baseline, higher management can make more objective decisions about the teachers teaching quality and can do better resource allocation . Disadvantages: •Depending solely on student evaluations might not produce accurate results . In some cases, student’s judgment will be biased to their personal attachment to teachers . •It is more likely that the instructor of a fun elective ( Ex: Music, Wine Tasting, Scuba Diving etc ) is going to get higher rating than other teacher who teaches a major core course ( Ex: Statistics, Finance etc) Unintended negative consequences: •Students often better evaluate teachers who are lenient (in grading, class schedules, attendance etc) but may not be necessarily be a good performing teacher . This can result in some best teachers left out of the rewards program . Ultimately, unfair evaluations and rewards might hurt the performance of good teachers . •Students may collectively use evaluations to punish good teachers who they think are assigning too many homework’s, exams, projects etc . To avoid negative feedback, teachers may refrain from assigning required assessments, projects etc . Ultimately, decreasing the quality of the education provided .
