Capital Punishment
Capital punishment, also known as the death penalty, is the highest level of judicial punishment one can receive in the United States. Executing individuals for heinous crimes has been around for ages. Still, it continues to be a highly controversial issue that is disputed in California today. A strong case can be made either for, or against capital punishment. The judicial system needs to make slight changes in order to make the advantages of execution even more substantial. If the government were to reduce the number of appeals and were to expedite the sentencing process, capital punishment would have a positive impact on society. Despite judicial elimination having minimal room for error, it can benefit society by deterring crime, reducing cost, and providing a sense of closure to the victim’s family. Capital punishment would be an effective deterrent if the death penalty was carried out more frequently. The belief of deterrence is based on the concept that the threat of punishment must be strict enough to reverse the benefits or enjoyment that the criminal would receive from the crime. An individual would be less likely to commit a heinous crime if they knew the ultimate punishment was their own death.
