Montana 1948- through a child's eyes

Montana 1948 is novel about the loss of childhood innocence. The bulk of the story is featured primarily through the eyes of David Hayden; a young twelve year old kid. Throughout the novel, readers get a glimpse of what David thinks of the scenario involving Frank. What he realises is that by knowing this secret of the family, he has lost his childhood innocence and thus matures into a young adult by learning how to deal with it. This essay primarily explores the changing roles of two very important men in his life; Wes and Frank, and how they appear in David’s mind. When we first meet David, he had a great liking for Uncle Frank. In the book he states that “Frank was witty, charming, at smiling ease with his life and everything in it. ” By quoting what David said, we can see that he had alot of respect for his uncle. After all, he was a war hero, a star athlete and a doctor. David idolises him at the start of the book as he is successful in life.
