Essay on the changes of doodle in "Scarlet Ibis, by John Hurst
One character in the short story “Scarlet Ibis”, by John Hurst went through this horrible experience; this character was Doodle’s brother. Unfortunately, it took the death of Doodle before Doodle’s brother gained insight on what type of person he really was. Doodles brother gained many insights throughout “Scarlet Ibis”, but the three most important ones would be not to rush things and to be patient, have dedication, as well as the value of life. These insights lead to change and awareness because all the experiences he went through when gaining them made him realize the things that he needed to change and become aware to. Doodles brother was so anxious and determined to make Doodle “normal” that he wasn’t patient and rushed things. Doodles brother was so selfish that he didn’t care about Doodles health or what could happen to him if he was pushed to hard. In “Scarlet Ibis” Doodles brother says “He, too, now believed in my infallibility, so we set the deadline for these accomplishments less that a year away, when, it had been decided, Doodle could start to school”(Hurst ). Setting a deadline shows that he was impatient because if he really wanted to see Doodle improve he should have just let it happen naturally. In the end it took Doodles death for Doodles brother to realize that he shouldn’t have rushed things and should have been more patient. Although Doodles brother pushed Doodle to hard he did show one good quality.
