In the story she is trying to instill strength in her son, by warning him of the ups and downs that may occur in his life. The poem states, when the mother says and repeats “Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair” (Hughes 8). Referring to crystal, glass that is fine in quality crystal stairs meaning her life was not something of beauty. Her stairs were made of old wood, that gave splinters and there was no carpet where she lived. Dealing with poverty and run-down homes only made her a strong individual. Living in these conditions gives its own incentives to strive for better. “But all the time, I’se been climbin along” (Hughes 8), she tells her son this because she wants him to think the same way. Just because life gets hard and there may be tuff situations, does not mean you give up or look for an easier way to deal with everyday issues. In the poem she says she is still going “I’se still climbin”, hearing that confirms everything she was trying to get across to him.
