“I’m going to write my name,” she said. ... ” I thought incredulously. My eyes shot to hers and, trying to hide my overwhelming disbelief, I slowly spelled, “L-A-U-R-E-N.” I watched the gnarled hand etch out the barely legible letters in what looked like the crude markings of a three-year-old who had just learned to grasp a pencil. The first five minutes of mine and Lauren’s relationship opened my eyes to things that I would remember and apply years later. Here I was, the sixteen-year-old who had just gotten her drivers license, and here Lauren was, the sixteen-year-old who had just learned for the hundredth time how to spell her name.
