Catcher in the Rye

D Salinger’s book, Catcher in the Rye, he portrays a character by the name of Holden Caulfield to be a teenager who is infatuated with the innocence of being a child and child hood experiences. Holden encounters people he refers to as “phonies” as he’s exiting adolescence and entering the life of adult hood. Holden not being to fond of this new adult life having to face fake people and every day problems, try’s and saves the innocence of little kids, most of all his little sister Phoebe and try’s the be “The Catcher in the Rye”. Towards the end of the novel, Holden and Phoebe were on a carousel as it was going around and around. The carousel represents childhood and innocence. Holden not wanting his sister to get off the carousel symbolizes how he doesn’t want her to grow up and become part of the adult world. But phoebe cannot stay on the carousel forever, some time she has to get off and move on, representing she will have to grow up and be apart of the cruel adult world. Allie Holden’s brother was a smart intelligent young boy that had died at a young age. He represents childhood and the only way to be a child forever like Holden wants, and wants for all the children, is to die as a child. The only way to live life and become something is to grow up, mature and become accommodated to the real adult world.
