. The Puritans placed a high emphasis on education . The Puritans founded both the Boston Latin School and Harvard University . Life in New England was centered around the town and was very structured and organized . Towns were legally chartered, distributed land, conducted town meetings in the form of a direct democracy and education for towns of fifty or more families . The government was taken care of by white male landowners, which were many due to the distribution of the land to townspeople . Overall, the town was the center of life for everyone in New England . The economic development of any colony will in turn have a drastic impact on the governmental and political system of that colony . This was clearly illustrated in the development of the plantation as it correlated with the development of the political and governmental systems . It was also illustrated with the development of the New England town in correlation with the governmental and political systems of such places as Massachusetts Bay colony and Plymouth colony .
