Today many businesses use a readability index to determine the reading difficulty of ones writing. The Fog index considers the length of sentences and the difficulty of words to estimate a grade level a person would need to understand the material. When writing a document, don’t try to aim for a certain readability level. Effective writing consists of quick and easy language. Knowing what readability level your target audience is at helps in conveying your message. A good writer never wants to confuse the reader with very complicated language. The readability index is a good guide for determining a general level of your writing. The only problem is that the index can easily be skewed with the use of improper language and run-on sentences. Although it’s not entirely accurate, the readability index a good rule of thumb that every writer should analyze. Every successful document employs varying sentence and paragraph length to achieve a certain purpose.
