the gut girls essay

Gut Girls Essay The Gut Girls by Sara Daniels is a play about the way a society works. It shows a reader who’s on the bottom. In this play it’s the men who are on top and this play shows that. The women can’t do much because the men have the upper hand. Daniels develops the theme of social structure in a society and she develops this through the character developments of Maggie, Priscilla and Lady Helena. Maggie is the strongest and boldest of the gut girls and she always wanted more for herself. In the beginning of the story Maggie was a very independent woman who always wanted better. When times got hard, she was the one who’d tell people to “think about getting paid, buying a new hat, being the Queen of England, anything,” (5). She always thought of the benefit of being a gut girl because she liked to be independent. Her independence leads to a bad relationship with her mother because they both have different beliefs on a woman’s role.
