These economic concerns shape the colonies that had effects even seen today. This can be shown through the type of economic system colonies embraced, and the type of labor force used to drive these systems. The labor force was basically two groups, first indentured servants that would eventually lead to a new labor forced, slavery. First, the type of system used by each colony determined the survival, and social structure of the colony. Second, indentured servants led to the mindset that would induce political change. Third, slavery shows how economic concerns were always put before religious concerns, and shape the future America’s culture. All three factors show how economic concerns influenced the British colonies more than religious concerns First, the type of economic system used by each colony determined the survival, and social structure of the colony. This can be seen in early Jamestown, in which the greed for gold nearly caused the colony to collapse. This caused John Smith to take over and force settlers to work for food, thus allowing the colony to survive. However, later on Jamestown’s charter is nearly revoked because of the lack of economic growth.
