... In Silas Marner, Silas Marner has everything he owns taken away from him. His life is a lot like Job’s however Silas chooses the wrong path, and loses his faith. Silas’ undergoes a major transformation due to his decision to leave his home, the loss of all this gold, and the adoption offer of his only daughter.
One of Silas Marner’s trials was his semi-forced decision to leave the city of Lantern Yard. ... Silas Marner lives in Lantern Yard and seems to have a perfect life which is made possible by a companion named William Dane Eliot describes the males having “…such a close friendship that it was the custom of their Lantern Yard brethren to call them David and Jonathan. ... ” The relationship that Silas and his best friend William Dane was not just a relationship as two mortals, but as a bond between three, Silas, William Dane, and God. Silas puts his trust in William Dane as he puts his trust in God. However, William Dane betrays Silas, and he faces his accusation with grace and ease. Silas remained calm and testifies with “God will clear me.” But when God’s plans collide with Silas’ wants, he turns bitter. “Poor Marner went out with that despair in his soul-that shaken trust in God and man, which is little short of madness to a loving soul.” Overtime, Silas chooses to let go of all his beliefs and turn away from his religion.
