Foot binding was a very normal thing for young girls in China to have to endure, being forced by their parents to render their feet practically useless. But why was this a tradition in China? Why did women feel the need to have small feet? And why did young girls, practically toddlers, have to endure such torture? Who started the custom? How did it affect the health of women? Why did it stop? From these questions I have created this report, and I hope you will fully understand the answers after reading it. The "Lotus Shoe" Foot binding took multiple steps, in which young girls went through excruciating pain, but that did not hinder the mothers' desire for her daughters to have bound feet. First, the mother would wash the foot, and massage it. Next she would break the first four toes, but left the big toe. Next, she would break the arch of the foot, and bend the top of the foot below the bottom portion of the foot. Finally, she would fold the top of the foot underneath the bottom, and bind it there with a 10 foot long by 2 foot wide piece of cloth. Every day, the foot would have to be unbound, then washed and massaged. It that care was not done or not done properly, toes and flesh could rot and even fall off. The consequences of foot binding are large. The smell is horrendous when everyday, the women would take off the binds to wash and massage their feet.
