Chris McLaughlin Sociology103 9/10/03 A. Stanford County 1. Hypothesis- Prison violence is caused not so much by antisocial prisoners or guards but by the nature of the prison itself. 2. Findings- When they did the research project they found that both guards and prisoners falling into stereotypical behavior, becoming bitter to one another and gradually losing their sense of basic human decency. 3. Conclusion- Zimbardo’s hypothesis that prison violence is in the social character of prisons themselves, rather than the personalities of guards and prisoners. 4. Problems- The prisoners, for their part, displayed increasing hostility toward the guards. Within four days, the researchers removed five prisoners from the study because of extreme emotional depression, crying, rage and acute anxiety. B. Black elite Survey 1. Hypothesis- Lois Benjamin was convinced that personal achievement did not lift minorities above the ordeal of hostility based on color.
