... 342-_The_perils_of_leadership_training
This assignment presents two sides of argument on the necessity and effectiveness of Leadership training. ...
Introduction
From experience and also from what can be observed in how change in companies has been influenced by leadership it can safely be said that leaders are very important to any company indeed. ... The first viewpoint maintains that due to the fact that we do not know much about how leaders are made to invest in such training is basically a waste of money. The author remains fuzzy about the role/definition of leadership as such. The explanations given why training is superfluous are: Firstly, you have a leader-personality or you don’t. Secondly there is no evidence that training can alter leadership style. Thirdly, the complexity of existing training theories is impossible to implement for any normal human being.
The counter viewpoint argues that large and successful corporations would not spend money on leadership training if it were a waste of money. It emphasizes that based on studies, leaders do make a difference in corporations and that the right and carefully chosen leadership training will not be a waste of money.
The perils of leadership training
Which viewpoint is right? ... However, before we can come to this we must start with the definition of what leadership is. ...
So what is leadership? According to the text book there is a difference between management and leadership. ... Should we therefore call all training in this regard management training rather than leadership training? ... However, in principle a definition of the terms concerned will give a clear direction for related tasks/directions and make it clearer and therefore, provides enough substance for a reasonably intelligent answer on the perils and opportunities of leadership/management training.
First of all management training is not a science that is based on mathematical formulas only but includes a lot of material referring to how people work, how business works and how it is applied on a management level.
