Received Orders to Get Pissed Off
As I was looking for an art piece by Barbara Kruger in articles and websites, I realized that choosing the “perfect art piece” to write about would be nearly impossible. ... Barbara Kruger’s art pieces are usually very simple to understand and a minor in modern art is not needed to decipher her unique art style, but I was still having troubles. ... At the point of being frustrated and almost worried that I wouldn’t have anything to write about, I came across an art piece that immediately opened my eyes and downright pissed me off. ...
The art piece which I stumbled onto is the photomontage “Untitled (We have received orders not to move)” by Barbara Kruger. ... The first row is black text on a white background saying “We have received orders” and the second row is white text on a black background saying “not to move”. ...
Barbara Kruger is, much like the same thing our class did, trying to sell us her belief through advertising. Kruger uses an advertising technique much the same as propaganda advertisements were for World War II. In an interview with Kruger, she said that she doesn’t want to press her views on people, but instead just make people aware of what she (and others) believe is going on in society (Mitchell, 1991). ... Barbara Kruger typically uses only black and white or black, white, and red. ... She has received orders not to move and the pins are making sure that she doesn’t move. ... It is for reasons like this that artist Barbara Kruger addresses this issue and raises these (feminist) issues.
Even the words, which are very large and easy to see, “received orders not to move” is very impersonal and harsh. Women are receiving these orders by men. People usually receive orders by people who are superior to them.
