In the beginning of the play, Rachel is known as the innocent religious priest’s daughter, and believes in the bible and only the bible. ... Rachel is very much in love with Cates, and stays by his side the whole trial and supports any decision he makes. Cates tells Rachel about evolution, and whats involved, and Rachel considers that it is possible, and she wonders if maybe the bible isnt the only good book there is, and that people should perhaps be free to make their own choices and express themselves however they want.
