Her father does not approve of this union, and believes that Rachel should not have any love towards Cates, as Cates is made out to be quite the sinner, however Rachel has other plans in the matter. Rachel wants nothing more than to please her father, and testifies against Cates in the trial. Rachels’ character changes immensely throughout the play.
