There is an obvious difference between the chronological order of events in this story and the order in which the events are revealed to the reader. This, I believe, had a huge impact on the reader’s sympathy for Charles Wales. As the reader I felt compassion for a man with a troubled past. We are introduced, as readers, to a reasonably successful man who is returning to a familiar city to visit his daughter whom he has not seen for sometime. We are shown this man’s love for his daughter and his desire to reclaim her as part of his family and a part of his everyday life. We carry along with him as he visits the home of his deceased wife’s sister and brother in-law to see the daughter he misses and loves. We are confronted with a hostile and unforgiving aunt who holds a serious grudge against a man with an ambiguous past.
