The story “The Destructors” by Graham Greene is based around a violent action which is an example of how social class in London, or all of Europe for that matter, played a part in people’s lives at the time Greene wrote the story. The tearing down of Old Misery’s house symbolizes two things; the removal of the upper class from the section of town that the gang lived in and Trevor completely removing himself from that upper class to bring himself to the same status as the rest of the gang. The neighborhood where Old Misery lived was mostly destroyed except for his house.
