Male versus Female Roles: Where are they?
The title of the play “Trifles,” written by Susan Glaspell is symbolic to the women during the beginning of the 20th Century. The play portrays the stereotypical views of men in how they portray the women’s gender roles within society during this century. Women’s roles were considered to be insignificant of the male roles. The womens’ roles during this time were duties such as cleaning, cooking, and sewing. They did not have a voice in matters that dealt with issues that were considered to be male roles and were considered to be an object to the males. Susan Glaspell brings out in the play “Trifles,” no matter what women thought about to a certain degree, the men considered it to be irrelevant. She elaborates her point by displaying the experience of women in how they relate to male and female gender roles, and how the views of women in what they may consider to be of importance to them can be considered trifling by the males.
Women during the early days of the 20th Century as related in the play “Trifles” by Susan Glaspell denotes women as being subservient to the males.
