Over the past few years, Abercrombie & Fitch (A&F), the store where President Teddy Roosevelt and Ernest Hemingway once bought their safari gear, and JFK bought his weekend look, has been under serious scrutiny. ... Abercrombie & Fitch, was filed on behalf of nine minority adults, including students and graduates of the University of California and Stanford, who were refused sales positions or terminated based on their race or ethnicity. ... Saenz, Vice President of Litigation for MALDEF says, “Through means both subtle and direct, Abercrombie has consistently reinforced to its store managers that they must recruit and maintain an overwhelmingly white workforce. ... ” Lu says she was fired after corporate officials visited the store, and according to her, didn’t like what they saw. Andrew Chin, writer for the Asian-based website, Model Minority, said in an October 2002 article, “Abercrombie should be held responsible for the false and misleading message it has sent the public: that its harmless fun to portray Asian Americans as coolies, laundrymen and rickshaw drivers, because everyone knows better and there no longer exist any problems of racial discrimination, harassment and violence based on the misconception that Asian Americans are exotic foreigners.
