Explain the effects on the Buddha of seeing the four sights. The bodhisattva or Siddhartha began to think seriously about his life and its meaning at the age of twenty nine. Until then the young prince had led a very sheltered and luxuries life. His father had been forewarned by prophets that Siddhartha would become either a great ruler or a religious man. His father anxious his son should rule kept him away from all ideas of suffering and the harsh reality of the world. His father was unsuccessful. On excursions from the palaces with his charioteer, Siddhartha saw four sights that changed his life. These were; • An old man; showing him that everyone grows old. • A sick person; showing him that everyone may face disease.
