Gleaming Parris Island Street lights crackled and popped when mosquitoes attempted to bob and weave past them, my heart thumps while human robots wailed out commands I could barely comprehend. Little did I know that this was the beginning of a relationship between me and five of the most inspirational people I would ever come across. The effect that each one of these individuals would have on my life would be a continuous molding process, even after leaving Parris Island. Leadership is the foundation of the Marine Corps. It affects the way young Marines like my subordinates and myself are raised in the Marine Corps. By the time a Marine reaches the rank of E-5 he should be approachable, dependable and have the physical and mental endurance to handle most situations he will encounter in the military. The Marine Corps encourages an individual Marine to be a vicious head biting leader who takes very little slack from his subordinates. Being approachable is an important trait to possess. Mastering this specific leadership quality can increase the troops’ confidence in their leader.
