Music Industry Research
Introduction: -
In this document I will try to outline the functions of a record company and the professional roles within it. ... I will address the update issues such as Mp3 downloading and look into how changing formats effect record companies. I will sum up the organizational structure of a record company and how they tie in with the rest of the industry.
What is a record company?
The main priority of a record company is to find artists and make money out of them. ... A record label is the piece of the puzzle that lays the bridge between an act giging in local bars etc and actually getting there music out to the masses.
The functions of a record company: -
The functions of a record company are broken down into departments but I will cover this later on in the document. ... If the contract is worth the paper it is written on then all the recording costs will be taken on by the record company. ... Following the recording and mastering it is then up to the record company to promote the act/recording. ... The record is then ready to be distributed through retail stores.
Record companies past and present and future: -
“The role and importance of record labels has changed considerably over the years”
Chris Wright – Chairman of Chrysalis Group plc.
I believe that the main reason for this is that in the past record labels had identities and “were instantly recognisable”. Not only did record companies specialize and actually have a love for the music they were selling, the logos that were associated to the label took pride of place on the vinyl. ... This is mainly down to money and the simple fact that as soon as indie label finds and act that stands out, one of the key players in the record company world simply buys up a large section or the whole label. An example of this is Bad Boy Entertainment when hip-hop started gaining popularity BMG acquired 50% of the company.
The current state of the music industry is scaring a lot of the big record companies, issues such as Mp3 downloading have hit them where it hurts most of all, straight in the wallet. I feel that many of the record companies were very slow picking up on the Peer to Peer service that many people around the world are using.
