The ‘death of God’, in regards to Nietzsche’s theory, represented a decline of Christianity being a prominent entity in European culture. This characterised a consequent waning of the values and morals that were built upon the knowledge that a god existed which thus symbolized the nihilistic nature of Nietzsche’s claims.
Nietzsche wrote about the ‘death of God’ in The Gay Science and this event, for Nietzsche signified a catastrophe in European culture. ... His statement that ‘God is dead . ... belief in the Christian God has become unbelievable’ (Nietzsche, GS #343) exemplifies this argument. He argues that without God, humans are left to fend minus the support of values and truths. Because there is the overwhelming theme that such values and truths are dependent on the existence of God humankind are consequently thrust into the ‘misery of a godless world’ (Kaufmann, 1980: 98).
