G.C.S.E Biology Coursework Experiment: To Investigate the Effect of Different Concentration of Sucrose Solution on Potato Tubar Cores James Bruton 17th December, 2002 Biology Coursework Experiment: To investigate the effect of different concentrations of sucrose solution on potato tubar cores. Preliminary Study: I will rely upon the following scientific theories and principles in order to make my prediction: a) Diffusion- the net movement of a substance from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration. This is down a diffusion gradient. b) Diffusion works because particles are always moving about in a random way. This means that the particles will spread out evenly eventually. The rate of diffusion depends on hoe fast the particles move, which is influenced by temperature and the size of the particles. c) Osmosis – the diffusion of water molecules. It needs a semi-permeable membrane, which lets water pass through but not other dissolved substances. d) Water will move via the membrane, from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration via that membrane. e) Osmosis and diffusion are passive, because they do not need energy from respiration to occur. The energy comes from the movement of the particles. Prediction: My hypothesis is that the potato cores will increase in volume when placed in distilled water.
