Janie and Existentialism

In Zora Neale Hurston’s novel, Their Eyes Were Watching God, Hurston illustrates Janie’s life as a journey in a search of self-discovery. ... With the combination of Hurston’s point of view of Janie and the principles of existentialism, the novel successfully interprets Janie’s voyage searching her horizon, identity and voice.
Janie’s search for self-identity begins when she questions herself. For example, in the opening of the novel, Janie was, “seeking confirmation of the voice and she found a personal answer for all other creations except herself” (11). This demonstrates that as others found their own voice and answer, Janie is left in isolation, unfulfilled and without voice. Although Their Eyes Were Watching God begins in the end of story, the quote sets up an atmosphere conveying Janie’s quest for identity and voice because it is a necessity to be her own self, the Janie she wants to create and to be self-fulfilled. ... For instance, when after Joe Stark’s death, Janie “cried all night under lonesomeness…she had been getting ready [to go]…in search or people…to show her shine” (89-90).
